Quick and digestive South Indian soup like dish made with tamarind and spices. Suitable for rice.

Ingredients :

Tamarind - rolled into 2cm diameter ball / gooseberry size

Tomato small - 1/2
-
Garlic cloves - 2 small
-
Cumin (jeera) seeds - 1/2 tsp
-
Pepper corns - 1/2 tsp
-
Dried Red Chilli - 1
-
Curry leaves - 4-5
-
Coriander leaves - few sprigs
-
Turmeric powder - 1/8 tsp
-
Sambar powder - 1/2 tsp(optional)
-
warm water - 200ml
-
Water - 250ml
-
Oil - 2 tsp
-
Salt -as required
Method :

Wash and soak the tamarind in warm water for few minutes.

Cut tomato and coriander leaves.

Crush the cumin seeds, pepper corns, chilli, garlic and curry leaves.

Squeeze out the tamarind pulp, strain and keep this tamarind juice aside.

Heat a 1/2 litre pan on the medium heat, add oil; Add the crushed ingredients and let it fry for few minutes.

Add tomato and turmeric powder.

Now add the tamarind juice to the pan.

Add chopped coriander leaves.

Add sambar powder if needed.

Reduce the heat to a low flame, cover and cook for 5 mins.
Notes : Tamarind can be replaced by Lemon/Tomato for a different flavour. For a better taste, eat it with softly cooked rice, Ghee and Dhal.
