Dhal

Very easy and tastier Indian dish made with Masoor Dhal and spices. Suitable for Rice and Chapati.

Ingredients :

 

  • Masoor Dhal - 125 grams
  • Onion chopped - 2 tblsp
  • Tomato - 1 small
  • Garlic cloves - 3-4 small
  • Butter/Ghee - 2 tsp
  • Cooking oil - 1 tblsp
  • Coriander leaves - few sprig
  • Water - as required
  • Salt - to taste

Spice powders:

  • Garam Masala - ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
  • Chilli powder - ½ tsp


Method :
  1. Rinse the Dhal and drain it.
  2. Chop onion, tomato, garlic and coriander leaves.
  3. Heat a pressure cooker pan on the stove.
  4. Add dhal, about 75-100ml of water, onion, tomato, 2 cloves of garlic and turmeric powder.
  5. ** Cover and pressure cook. Switch off after first whistle and open after 1-2 minutes. Take care when opening the pressure cooker.
  6. Now place a small pan on a stove and add oil to the pan once it is hot.
  7. Add the remaining garlic, garam masala and chilli powder and fry for about 2-3 minutes.
  8. Remove this pan from heat and put the dhal pan on the stove again.
  9. Add this fried garlic and butter/ghee to the cooked dal and cook for about 1-2 minutes.
  10. Garnish with coriander leaves.
If the pressure cooker is not available, replace the step 5 above starting with the symbol ** with the following steps and continue to step 6 above.

  1. Add Dhal, water, onion, tomoato and 2 cloves of garlic and turmeric powder to a 1 litre pan.
  2. Add about 250ml of water.
  3. Cover and cook and about 12-15 minutes. Open the lid and stir in the middle and make sure there is enough water left.

Notes : Toor dal can be used instead of Masoor dal.
