Main Ingredient : Semolina/Wheat
Recipe Type : Breakfast

Ingredients :

  • 1 Cup or 250g Coarse Semolina
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 1 tsp Urid Dal
  • 1 Sprig Curry Leaves
  • 8 Cashewnuts (optional)
  • 3 Green Chillies
  • ½cm Cube Ginger
  • 1 small Onion
  • 3 tblsp Oil or all ghee
  • 1 tblsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2" long piece of Carrot (optional)
  • 2.5 Cups Water

Method :

  1. Roast semolina in a frying pan for few minutes until it gives out the characteristic fried smell. Remove from fire and keep aside.

  2. Heat oil well, season with mustard, urid dal and curry leaves. Add nuts broken into small pieces. Fry until golden brown.

  3. Add finely cut green chillies, ginger, onion and carrot; stir for about 3 – 4 minutes.

  4. Add water with salt and boil.

  5. Add semolina, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon. Mix well.

  6. Lower heat. Cover the vessel with a tight fitting lid. Allow semolina to get cooked and become thick consistency.

  7. Uppuma is ready to be eaten.

Note: Broken wheat (Dalia) may be substituted for semolina.

Notes : Can be eaten with Coconut chutney.

    Hi,
When you say mustard here, do you mean mustard seeds?

  2. Mariam says:

This came out really well, though I had to use about 2.5 cups water as the semolina just soaked up the 2 cups instantly. How long would you normally leave it with the lid on as mine cooked pretty quickly?
