Meat balls also known as Kayir katti kola is a special delicacy in the Southern state of India. In the ancient time, they used the thread/plantain fibre to hold the meat and spices squeezed into a ball. Kayir katti kola in tamil means thread tied meatball. But now, breadcrumbs are availabe to hold the meat and spices.

Ingredients :

Minced Lamb/mutton - 400g
-
Onion - 1 small
-
Ginger - 1" long and 3/4" wide piece
-
Garlic - 4-5 big cloves
-
Green Chilli - 3
-
Chopped coriander leaves - 1 tblsp
-
Lemon juice- 1 tblsp
-
Egg Medium - 2
-
Golden Breadcrumbs - 125g
-
Salt - to taste
-
Oil - 250ml for deep frying
Ingredients to be ground:

Cinnamon - 1 inch long strip
-
Cloves - 2
-
Cardamom - 2
-
Poppy seed - 1 tsp (optional)

Grated Coconut - 3 tblsp
-
Roasted gram dal - 5 tsp
Spice powders:
-
Turmeric powder - 1/8 tsp
-
Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Method :

It is necessary to grate the onion, ginger, garlic, chilli, and coriander leaves v.finely. Grate the coconut.

Rinse the minced meat and drain them well.

Heat a wide non-stick pan.

Add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, poppy seeds, roasted gram dal and grated coconut. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes. Switch off the pan.

Grind all the fried ingredients without water when they are cold enough.

Heat the pan again.

Add the minced meat and all the spice powders; Fry and cook them for about 8-10 minutes or until all the water is evaporated. Grind the fried mince coarsely with the lemon juice when they are cold enough.

Combine the ground meat, salt, ground cinnamon and other ingredients, finely grated onion, ginger, garlic, chilli and coriander leaves and mix well.

Make them into 4-5cm balls.

Beat the eggs and keep it in a bowl.

Place the breadcrumbs on a plate.

Heat a deep frying pan on a medium heat and add oil.

Coat the meat balls with the beaten egg first and then with the breadcrumbs.

Fry the coated meat balls in oil 5-6 at a time until they become golden brown.

Repeat the above step until all the meat balls are fried.
Notes : This dish can be served as an appetizer in the parties or as a side-dish for Lunch/Dinner. If you dont have breadcrumbs, toast few slices of bread and grind them coarsely.
