Paruppu rasam is a variety of rasam made with lentils for the added taste. It goes well with the softly cooked rice.

Ingredients :

2 tblsp Toor dal
-
2cm ball size Tamaraind
-
2-3 cloves Garlic
-
1 big tomato
-
½ tsp Mustard seeds
-
1 pinch asafoetida/Perungaayam
-
1/8 tsp Turmeric powder
-
1 tsp Sambar powder
-
2 tsp of chopped coriander leaves
-
2 tsp cooking oil
Method :
-
Crush the garlic cloves, cut the tomato and soak the tamarind in a ½ cup of hot water.

Wash the dhal and add it to the pressure cooker with the garlic and chopped tomatoes.

Cook it until the two whistles is heard. Switch off.

Meanwhile, make a tamarind juice from the soaked tamarind. Add more water if needed.

Open the pressure cooker when it is cooled down.

Mash the dhal. Add the prepared tamarind juice , half of chopped coriander leaves and sambar powder to the Dhal.

Allow the dhal and tamarind juice to boil well.

Heat a small frying pan; add oil; When the oil is hot enough, add mustard seeds and allow it to pop.

Add turmeric powder, curry leaves and asafoetida; fry for a minute and switch off.

Add the above seasoning to the boiling rasam(soup) and switch off the stove.

Garnish it with rest of the coriander leaves.
Notes : For a better taste, eat it with softly cooked rice, Ghee and any vegetable stir fry.
